Aussie Politicians: Fat & Unhealthy And Drain The Health System

Tony Abbott

I have debated whether to enter this snake pit but why the hell not . . .

This is not a political blog on who to vote for and who not to, but rather my views on fat, unhealthy politicians on both sides!

In the low news month of December, Tony Abbott was lambasted for wearing his budgie smugglers. Kevin Rudd was even quoted as saying: “”If there was a referendum tomorrow between budgie-smugglers and boardies, I think I would be voting for boardies. There should be certain things the Australian people are protected from, and that’s national political leaders so attired.”

The reality is Tony Abbott is a former boxer and now life saver at Queenscliff and is fit. He looks fit and is very healthy. He will not be a drain on the Australian health system.

I am curious:

  • What would be the average BMI of Australia’s politicians?
  • How many calories would be consumed in the parliamentary dining room every day?
  • What is the average resting heart rate for the people that represent us?
  • How many are on medication?
  • How many could keep up with a work out with Barack Obama or even a power walk with ex-PM John Howard?

Are these relevant points to the economic future of the country? Or to control climate change?

Probably not but I am aware of this fact . . . people like role models. We live in a world of aspiration and our leaders often provide inspiration for what we aspire to be . . . and I wonder if our leaders are inspiring us to have a healthy life?

If every morning there was politicians working out, nutritionally healthy diets followed and public sharing of their state of health, then this accountability may improve their own personal health status. They would set a great example for the rest of the country.

And of course this would then help reduce the health care costs for Australia.
